sillydicemaze asked: I personally dislike Kill la Kill, but I've seen some feminists whom I otherwise respect praise the show. They interpret the show as a metaphor for puberty and coping with the unwanted sexual attention that girls face at that stage of their lives. I've seen people cite Satsuki's dialogue in episode 3 regarding the outfit as empowering and pro-feminist. I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts about this interpretation? I can't quite articulate why it bothers me.

adventuresofcomicbookgirl:

I’m sorry, but that interpretation willingly ignores the huge amount or rape culture and victim blaming the show upholds for its fetish fuel so it is Not Okay. Do not call this show feminist. Calling it feminist is harmful.

There are very, very few shows I will say this about, so this should tell you how fucked up this show is and how severely it repelled me and how harmful I find it.

There are shows I hate with the fury of a million suns and have no problem with ppl reading feminist or whatever -ist things into. I’m infamous for hating fma 2003, but if you want to interpret it a certain way, I’m not going to argue with you because that’s fine. If you think it’s feminist, more power to you. I will disagree and if you try to excuse, frex, how atrociously Rose was treated, I will definitely fight you (verbally), but feminist interpretations (or other, idk how to put it, social justice interpretations) are fine, it just shows you have a different pov than me, and usually that can help me learn things. I think it’s not bad to find good things in ANYTHING. It’s usually not harmful.

But interpreting this show as in any way feminist is harmful because this show IS trying to present itself as empowering but thematically it is a HUGE FUCKING PILE OF VICTIM BLAMING AND RAPE CULTURE. If you’re embracing it as feminist, you’re letting the creators get away with essentially telling women that if they feel ashamed and embarrassed with LITERALLY BEING FORCED into clothes they are not comfortable in (and lbr who wouldn’t be at least physically uncomfortable in that outfit it’s a restrictive uncomfortable nightmare she GETS A VAGINA WEDGIE during her transformation sequence it would be much  more comfortable and just as protective to just get naked) that were LITERALLY FORCED on them by a bunch of creepy-ass men (including her own DAD) wtf, she is literally being forced to bond with this uniform with a male voice  who seems to identitfy as male who stripped her and forced himself on her in a scene that was ~HILARIOUSLY~ like rape, she had NO ACTUAL CHOICE IN THE MATTER

This show is tells the main character it is HER FAULT for being uncomfortable and not okay with being forced into this shit

Satsuki flat out tells the main character it is HER FAULT for letting the guys who sexually harrass her get to her and she should just overcome them or whatever.

And accepting this fucked up rhetoric is what allows our main character to ~level up~ and get ~more power~ realizing she was wrong all along and Satsuki and her creepy-ass rapetastic uniform are right.

This show basically flat out says “it is your fault you’re not okay with being raped and violated, just get over it, go along with it, make the best of it, work with men who take away your choice and accept them”. And is dressing it up as empowering.

THIS IS THE CORE OF THE SHOW.

Do not let them get away with it. Do not let them excuse their blatant objectification of women, hideous fanservice sequences that show no grasp on anatomy, and all that shit with psuedo-feminist victim blaming bullshit. Because that was what the show was trying to do, it wasn’t thinking of being empowering, it was a bunch of dudes trying to excuse their gross fanservice by trying to convince people “it’s about empowering women!!!” but their idea of “empowerment” just revealed how fucked up they really are.

It is perfectly fine to not want to be forced into clothes you don’t like and feel uncomfortable in. It’s is not a woman’s fault if she feels uncomfortable wearing revealing things in public, it’s society’s and forcing yourself to wear these things even if you hate itbecause “I shouldn’t let them get to me!!!” is not a solution. And there’s almost no fucking way sexual harrassment won’t humiliate and bother someone. It’s not your attitude that needs to change. It’s theirs. Don’t let anyone but the blame on the woman for feeling uncomfortable. Buying into that is harmful, there’s no getting around it.
